Since ancient times, elephants have held deep symbolism for many cultures across the world. Consistently a symbol of strength and wisdom, the image of the elephant has been used to adorn religious items and humbler artifacts. In Africa, the figure of the elephant often symbolizes a tribal chief. In India, elephants are revered, respected and closely associated with the elephant-headed god, Ganesh. Even in popular culture, elephants — such as Dumbo and Babar — are deeply beloved characters.

Often seen as noble creatures, elephants are praised for both their gentle wisdom and militant abilities. The remarkably long life span of these animals has made them symbols of longevity. They are well-known for their unusual intelligence and long memories. They are very family-oriented and one of the only non-human species known to use tools. Unfortunately, the now-illegal ivory trade has decimated the proud species following years of poaching. However, the conservation and anti-poaching efforts of the past few decades have done enormous good in preserving and protecting these majestic creatures.
