Sapphires may be the birthstone for those born in September, but the mesmerizing blue gem is a standout any time of the year.
Steeped in a rich history, sapphires are said to symbolize nobility, truth, sincerity and faithfulness. So it’s no wonder why the stone made so much sense as the famous center star of the late Princess Diana’s engagement ring.
Of course, it’s now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, who dons the stunning blue sapphire on her wedding ring finger, perpetuating the tradition of the stone as the royal standard.
Before the British monarchy adopted the stone as their own, during the middle ages sapphires were seen to represent faith and celestial hope, with clergy wearing the stone to symbolize heaven.
The sapphire also holds meaning across every religion and believed to carry powers of protection and insight in Christianity, while possessing the possibility for spiritual enlightenment for Buddhists.
Of course, sapphires are also found in hues outside of the brilliant lapis blue shade, pink, yellow and black among those, but it really is that true blue color that is most commonly associated with the stone and makes it work as a timeless gem that can be worn casually and everyday or in the most regal of settings by royalty or those who just want to feel like they are.
